Starry Night Ride by Merrill Swim 2022

Art Bike is a mobile art installation in my bicycle trailer featuring historical art figures sculpted out of trash and paintings reflecting their signature style. You can find Art Bike at events in Santa Fe where I am also vending other works of art and other concerts and festivals. Art Bike was born out of an idea to sell art out of baskets on my 70's cruiser bike. While Art Bike Year One turned out to be clumsy to handle while biking, unsteady while holding in place trying to make sales and, ultimately, illegal as I had no vendor license, I was not ready to give up the fun I had biking around with my art. I came up with a new plan for Art Bike Year Two (2021), incorporating a useful trailer that can haul not only sculpture, but also my camping gear, and art vending set-up. Art Bike 2021 featured Frida Kahlo and Pablo Picasso, who sat in the trailer painting together. The paintings I did in their styles also featured bicycles, a commom theme in my work and the essence of Art Bike. Art Bike 2021 could be found all over the streets and campground at both weeks of Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, Colorado, and at the Railyard Santa Fe yoga and reggae concert with Jesse Royal and Boomroots Collective in Santa Fe, New Mexico. After an inspiring exhibition, Beyond Van Gogh, I decided to feature Vincent Van Gogh on Art Bike 2022 (year three!). I painted "Starry Night Ride" in the style of Van Gogh's most popular painting, Starry Night, which I've seen in person at the MOMA in NYC. I added my own personal touches by painting in Vincent himself taking a night bike ride by headlight in the classic French landscape.
